Blake Girls Hockey: A Fast Start Backed by Defense, Depth, and Dominant Goaltending
The Blake Girls Hockey team is seven games into the season, and the early storyline is clear: defensive discipline, scoring depth, and elite goaltending have laid a strong foundation.
Blake has outscored opponents 20–8 through seven games, with consistent production each period — 6 goals in the first, 8 in the second, and 6 in the third. Offensively, the Bears have generated 218 shots, averaging over 31 shots per game, while holding opponents to 202.
The scoring has been balanced across the lineup. Makenzie Williams leads the team with 8 points (3G, 5A), closely followed by Ella Bond (6 points) and a trio at 5 points each: Hannah Jones, Bella Bisbee, and Adeline Wethington. In total, 15 different skaters have already recorded at least one point – a testament to Blake’s depth.
Defensively, Blake has been exceptional. Opponents are scoring just 1.14 goals per game, thanks in large part to outstanding goaltending from Janie McGawn. Through seven games, McGawn has posted a 1.14 GAA, a .970 save percentage, and 4 shutouts, stopping 196 of 202 shots. She also recently reached a major career milestone with 2,235 career saves, cementing her place among the program’s all-time greats.
The Bears’ ability to control play, limit high-danger chances, and generate offense from all three lines has fueled a strong start. As they move deeper into the season, Blake’s blend of structure, competitiveness, and chemistry positions them well for continued success. The Bears take on Mound Westonka/Southwest Christian tomorrow night and then section opponent Chisago Lakes on Saturday!
