The girls' tennis team won the Section 5A Championship for the sixth straight year! The match was tied 3-3 with one match to go. Nana Vang came through in the clutch at #4 singles to wrap up the victory and the championship for the Bears.

Due to the pandemic, no state tournament will be played negating the Bears from going for a 6th straight state championship.

Congratulations to all of the girls especially the three seniors Sonia Baig, Catherine Barry, and Meara Sullivan.

Last Saturday, another great cross country meet was held on the Blake campus. The Bears were victorious on both the boys and girls side over their IMAC opponents. Shef West and Ian Acheson finished first and second for the third time this year while Molly Liston won the girls race followed by Jackie Weyerhaueser and Caroline Pollack.

Earlier this week, the girls’ tennis team beat Mounds Park Academy 7-0 on Tuesday to win the IMAC championship again this year. Then they hosted Edina on Wednesday in a tough non-conference match. Play was halted due to rain before the match could be concluded as Edina won the doubles matches and Nana Vang won her singles match. Multiple downpours set in at 5:30 as the Bears’ were dominating the rest of the singles matches with Allyson Jay, Sonia Baig, and Bella Suk all about to serve for their victories when the weather turned bad. Due to scheduling restrictions, no make up match will be scheduled.

The girls’ soccer team also won the IMAC championship on Tuesday with a 3-0 victory over the Breck Mustangs. Goals were scored by Carly Shoemate and Amelia Reyes (2). MaKenna Vavrichek posted another shutout during her excellent senior year. The boys’ soccer team got back on a winning streak downing Southwest Christian Academy 2-1 behind goals by Nate Gullickson and Jackson Lagos. Both the boys and girls finish the regular season next week with home games against Orono on Monday and Thursday against Minneapolis opponents (the boys play Southwest and the girls play South).

Finally, the girls’ swimming and diving team hosted Lakes International Language Academy on Tuesday night and swam away with the victory. Carly Bixby, Molly Seidel, Hannah Sweet, Sara Richardson, and Sophie Sznewajs led the way with multiple individual race victories. The Bears will host Mounds Park Academy on Tuesday, October 6.

Upcoming, the volleyball team will have their first game on Friday, October 9 as will the SMB football team comprised of players from St. Paul Academy, Minnehaha Academy, and Blake.

The week started off with senior for girls’ tennis as the Bears beat Orono 6-1 behind victories by senior Sonia Baig at #1 singles and seniors Catherine Barry and Meara Sullivan in doubles. Later in the week, the Bears took down IMAC rival Breck in a tight 4-3 match. All four singles players (Sonia Baig, Bella Suk, Allyson Jay, and Nana Vang) won their matches to secure the victory.

On Tuesday, the Bears completed a soccer sweep over the St. Paul Academy Spartans as the boys JV team won 1-0, the girls’ varsity 6-0, and boys’ varsity 4-1. Later in the week, the boys were tripped up by Breck 4-1 in varsity play and 1-0 at JV. The varsity score was not indicative of the game as the Bears and Mustangs played a tight game throughout the night with the Mustangs scoring two late goals. In the later game, the girls dominated Providence Academy 9-0 highlighted by Rachel Winkey scoring her first career goal and Charlotte Morrison scoring from about 25 yards out with a bomb to the upper corner.

The cross country team will host an IMAC meet on Saturday, September 26 while the girls’ swimming and diving team’s next meet is Tuesday, September 28.
