Knocked off #1 Benilde and Rival Breck

The Blake Bears girls soccer team seem to have things going in the right direction early in the season and the last two games have been further proof. On Saturday, the Bears defeated section rival Benilde-St. Margaret's by a score of 1-0 in overtime. It had been almost five seasons since the last time the Bears were able to take down the Red Knights from Benilde. Benilde is currently ranked at the #1 team in Class A. Scoring in the first overtime for the Bears was freshmen Kyra Reese. Senior Sara McClanahan was credited with the assist on the game winning goal. The goal, coming with 30 seconds left in the first overtime, proved to be enough as senior Lucia Warner earned her second shutout of the season.

The Blake girls returned to home on Tuesday for a meeting with another rival, the Breck Mustangs. The Bears, who were accompanied by Blake Lower School girls (future Bears) during the pre-game announcements, got off to a two goal lead in the first half. Goals by freshmen Bailey Abraham, assisted by freshmen Cate Moe, and McClanahan gave them the first half lead. In the second half, it was all Bears again with goals by Abraham, her second of the game, assisted by junior Jade Sund, Reese, assisted by junior Maddie Tix, and Moe. Warner did her part in goal again recording her third straight shutout.

The Bears remain busy this week as they head to St. Thomas Academy where they will play Minnehaha Academy on Thursday, September 7th at 6:30pm.
