Winter Sports 2016-2017 Summary

BOYS ALPINE SKI

 

The Boys Alpine team had a strong year.  

The Boys finished 2nd place in the Independent Metro Athletic Conference (IMAC)  with a score of 2144.5 point.   Nathan Girk and Michael Mitchell were named IMAC All Conference while Will Rekas and Sean Plunkett were named IMAC All Conference Honorable Mention.  

Zach Dekko represented the Boys program well at the State Tournament as he finished 4th overall.  He had runs of 37.61 (4) and 38.54 (5).

GIRLS ALPINE SKI

Blake Girls Alpine had a standout year!  

The Girls team won the Independent Metro Athletic Conference (IMAC) team championship with a score of 2175.5.  Lauren Nida, Georgia Clark, and Annabella Walser were named IMAC All Conference while Peyton Crosby and Norah Higgins were named IMAC All Conference Honorable Mention.  

The Girls team won the Section Meet and advanced to the State Tournament. 

At State, Blake Senior Nellie  Ide took home the Girls Individual State Championship with two strong runs.  Ide placed first in both her first run 36.93 (1) and her second run 36.70 (1) to earn the title of the State of MInnesota's best female skier.  

As a team, the Blake Girls Alpine took 7th place in the State Meet.  Lauren Nida finished 7th overall with times of 41.14 (8) and 40.26 (7).   Those times were good enough to earn All State honors for Nida. 

Other team members battled the tough elements and brought home impressive results at the State's most competitive race.  Anabella Walser finished 37th and Nora Higgins finished 40th overall.  Sarah DeMane and Georgia Clark also participated.   This race capped an incredible season by the Blake Girls Alpine team.

BOYS BASKETBALL

The Blake Boys Basketball team finished the season with a 10-17 record. Their season ended against Orono in the section 6AAA quarterfinals. This Bears team doubled their win total from the previous year but lose 8 Seniors next season. Blake returns a confident group of young players.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Blake Girls Basketball team finished the season with a 13-14 record. Their season ended against Orono in the section 6AAA quarterfinals. The Bears were led by lone Senior Nia Harris who won IMAC Player of the Year (first Blake player ever). Blake Girls return a young but experience team next season.

FENCING

The Blake Fencing team completed their winter season with a strong performance.

Earlier in the season, the team competed against SPA, TCFC, MSC, and Holy Family.  

At the State Tournament the Mens Saber, Womens Saber, and Womens Foil all took third place.  The Mens Epee team took second.

BOYS HOCKEY

The Blake Bears Boys Hockey team finished the 2016-2017 season with a 13-14 record and a loss in the Section 2A Semifinals to Delano (eventual section champion). The boys showed a lot of progress throughout the year and will enter next season with 14 returning letter winners including their top four scorers from this season.

GIRLS HOCKEY

The Blake Bears Girls Hockey Team capped off another amazing season by winning the Class A State Championship, their second in a row, and fourth in the last five years. The season was one to remember as they defeated both the Class AA State Champion, Edina, and the Class AA State Runner-Up, Blaine, throughout the year. Many girls were rewarded by receiving state-wide recognition. The girls completed the season as IMAC Champions, Section 5A Champions, and Class A State Champions!

GIRLS NORDIC SKI

The Blake Girls Nordic Ski Team finished up their season at Hyland Park Reserve. The Bears were hampered by injuries and finished 6th in the IMAC. With a young group coming back next season the Bears should be ready to compete in the IMAC.

BOYS NORDIC SKI

The Blake Boys Nordic Ski Team ended their season in a sections meet at Hyland Park Reserve. Junior Captain Max Owens finished 16th at the section meet. The Bears competed to a 4th place finish in the IMAC.

On Saturday, March 4th the BlakeBreck Bearstangs upset defending State Champion St Thomas Academy to capture the 2017 Class 1A State Swimming and Diving Championship.

Where Are They Now?

Carly Bullock '16 was recently named ECAC Rookie of the Year. Bullock currently has 20 goals and 10 assists in 30 games for the Princeton Tigers.

Zach Doerring '12 and his Concordia Cobbers qualified for the MIAC playoffs this season. Doerring scored the game winning goal in the Cobbers' playoff quarterfinal win over Hamline.

Nick Washuta '16 was recently named America East Conference Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week while playing lacrosse at Vermont.
