2019 Blake Spring Sports Summary

Baseball

The Blake Baseball team battled a tough spring through injuries and weather.  It was a season of streaks, first winning 3 in row, then losing 6 in a row, followed by 3 wins in a row, and ultimately ending the season on a 6 game losing streak.  The team is promising for next season as it graduates only one player for the current roster.

Season Record:  6-12

Clay Target

Blake's Clay Target Team finished their season at the State Tournament held in Alexandria, MN. The Bears were led by Junior Trace Chute and Senior Grant Winkey as they were the only Bears participating at the Varsity level. Trace finished tied for 51st and Grant finished tied for 237th with over a 1,000 participants. Sophomore Alex Viedma was a star at the JV level finishing tied for 4th place. Bears had a strong showing at the Novice level too. Junior Abby Tutterow led the way finishing tied for 9th while Senior Julia Abraham and her sister Sophomore Bailey Abraham both tied for 19th at the Novice level.

Boys' Golf

The Blake Bears Golf Team captured their 5th straight IMAC championship this season by going undefeated and winning both rounds of the IMAC tournament. The Bears finished in 3rd place in Section 4AA behind eventual AA State Champion, Holy Family. Senior Max Pihlstrom, and junior Gavin Best both qualified for the AA State Tournament as individuals. Best finished second place in the section with scores of 73-73 and went on to finish tied for eighth place at the state tournament with scores of 78-75.

Girls' Golf

The Blake Bears Girls' Golf Team had a great season that was capped off by claiming their first IMAC Championship and their first conference championship since 2002. The girls finished third in Section 4AA as senior Madeline Wethington was able to qualify for the state tournament as an individual. Wethington finished in a tie for 31st place at the AA State Tournament shooting scores of 87-88.

Boys' Lacrosse

The Blake Boys Lacrosse team finished the regular season 8-5 overall and earning the #2 seed in the SectionTournament. Blake would defeat fellow IMAC opponents Providence and Breck before ultimately losing in the Section Finals to Benilde.   Blake won the IMAC Championship for the 5th year in a row.

Girls' Lacrosse

This young Blake Girls Lacrosse team featured no seniors, 1 junior, and a plethora of underclassmen.  The team grew throughout the year.  In the playoffs, the Bears defeated Armstrong and won at Wayzata to reach the Section Finals before losing to Breck in a tight game.  We are excited to get this entire roster back for next season.

Softball

Blake Softball earned their first home playoff game in 15 years with a regular season record of 8-5. The Bear's finished runner-up in the IMAC conference. The season was highlighted by Sophomore MaKenna Vavrichek winning IMAC Athlete of the Month honors for her incredible play in April.

Synchronized Swimming

Blake's Synchronized Swim Team qualified for the State Tournament for the first time in their short history by finishing 3rd in sections. The Section Meet was highlighted with 1st place finishes by Olivia Lentz in the Short Solo and Claire Oh in Short Figures. Synchro also had 3 swimmers finish in 2nd place at sections; Kara Gerads (Long Figures), Solveig Bingham (Long Solo), and Marley Marty (Short Figures).

While advancing to the State Tournament Blake Synchro placed 7th. Kara Gerads had a strong performance in her Long Figures routine with a 3rd place finish.

Boys' Tennis

The Blake Boys Tennis team's bid to defend their Class AA State Championship fell short in the Section Finals to rival Edina.  None the less, the team had another great season.   Ranked in the top 5 all season, the Bears had big matches versus Orono, Eastview, Edina, Eagan, and Mounds View -- the eventual State Champions.

Track & Field

Blake Girls Track and Field continued their dominance as they won their second straight State Championship (5 total; 2001, 2006, 2012). Senior Robbie Grace led the charge all season as she took home 1st place, at State Tournament, in the long jump and the 400 meters. Freshmen Anisa Thompson was also a State Champion in the 200 meters. Along with winning the State title the Girls also won Section 4A and IMAC Championships. 

Blake Boys Track and Field finished the season on a positive note sending Freshmen Shef West to the State Tournament in the 1600 meters. The Boys as a team placed 5th in the IMAC and 11th in Section 4A.

Boys' Ultimate Frisbee

The Blake Bears Ultimate Frisbee team finished the year placing 13th in Division I state. They ended the year with a regular season record of 5-2 and took 2nd place in the conference, thus promoting them to Division I. They finished with an overall record of 9-11 after participating in the Hopkins Hustle and State Tournament. The Bears won the Spirit award for the Division I State Tournament, exemplifying the team's competitive, fun and sportsmanship nature.
