Dani Cameranesi '13

CAMERANESI HONORED TO WEAR 'A'

Aug. 18, 2016

By Hannah Barnes, Athletic Communications Student Intern

MINNEAPOLIS -- Senior forward Dani Cameranesi enters the 2016-17 season as an assistant captain for the Gopher women’s hockey team, joining fellow seniors Lee Stecklein (C) and Kate Schipper (A) in leading the squad.

Cameranesi has experienced significant individual success for the Maroon & Gold as she is a two-time Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award finalist and a two-time Second Team All-American. She finished last season with a career-best 68 points (33g-35a), which led the WCHA. Her performance earned her All-WCHA First Team and All-USCHO Second Team honors.

Aside from individual success, Cameranesi has helped the Gophers win two national championships, two WCHA regular-season titles, and one WCHA Final Face-off championship.

Throughout her success, Cameranesi has remained modest, stating she does not take her position as a captain for granted.

"It is a huge honor to be chosen to be a captain of the women’s hockey team," Cameranesi said. "To pretty much embody everything the program stands for and being named up there with all of the other captains in previous years, it is a great honor and means a lot."

Cameranesi plans to stick to the goals that the Gophers set every season, which are to win the WCHA regular season title, the WCHA Final Face-off tournament, and the national championship -- all while personifying the team's values and working her hardest.

"I am not as outgoing or vocal as other people," Cameranesi said. "I lead by example instead of vocally."

Cameranesi notes that she has played under many great captains in the past, and she hopes to exemplify the same characteristics that they did. She specifically looks up to former Gopher Bethany Brausen, who was captain during Cameranesi's freshman year.

"She is just a wonderful person, teammate and friend to have," Cameranesi said about Brausen. "I honestly strive to be the person that she is. How she carries herself and loves the people around her is amazing."

Cameranesi is looking forward to the approaching season, and she thinks the team will have another successful year.

"I think we will do really well," Cameranesi said. "The coaches always recruit really good people and players.

"I’m really excited for the season to get going and to get back on the ice. I’m excited to wear the 'M' again for my final season."
