Will have dual role as Associate Athletic Director

The Blake Athletic Department is pleased to announce the hiring of Greg May as both our new Boys’ Head Hockey Coach and Associate Athletic Director.  We are very excited to have Greg May in this dual role at Blake.

Greg May is a proven head coach who leads by creating a culture and environment that provides a meaningful experience for student-athletes both on and off the ice. Coach May has spent the last six years working in two top high school hockey programs in Minnesota.

Most recently, Coach May was the Head Coach at Farmington High School where he was faced with the challenge of rebuilding the hockey culture. Under his leadership, Farmington went 19-10-1 this past season, defeating Lakeville North in the Section Finals to advance to the Class AA State Tournament for the first time in school history. The prior year the team went 19-8-1 in its first season in the South Suburban Conference after playing in the Missota Conference.  May coached the school’s first Mr. Hockey Finalist, had another player selected to All-Metro and All-State teams and had two Reed Larson Finalists for Defensemen of the Year.  After the 15-16 season, he was named the Section 1AA Head Coach of the Year.

Prior to Farmington, May was an assistant varsity coach under the direction of legendary head coach Janne Kivihalme at Burnsville High School.  During his tenure at Burnsville, he coached nine Division I players, five Division III players, and had three players drafted in the NHL, including a first-round pick.  May was also named Section 2AA Assistant Coach of the Year.  Beyond high school hockey, May has had valuable experience working for the Chicago Steel of the USHL as a Minnesota scout. Other coaching stops included assignments with both Mounds View and Apple Valley.

As a player, May played high school hockey at Burnsville High School. May was a three-time All-Conference player at Burnsville High, from where he graduated in 2003. He was the school’s Athlete of the Year as a senior. Upon graduation, he attended Augsburg College where he was a MIAC All-Conference selection in hockey.

May holds a Bachelor of Science in Health Education and Physical Education from Augsburg College and a Master of Arts degree in Educational Leadership from Concordia University - St. Paul.  He spent nine years in ISD 191 as a Physical Education Teacher.  His passion for education matches the co-curricular experience we value so strongly here at Blake.  The opportunity to have our Head Boys' Hockey Coach at our school in his role as Associate Athletic Director provides the ability to interact with players every day throughout the year. This will be an incredible asset for the program and our community. We are excited for the gifts, ideas, skills, and energy that he will bring to all our athletic programs in addition to hockey.

We will be setting up a meet and greet time and date in the near future. Look for information in the coming days.

Please join us in welcoming Greg May to the Blake community.

Go Bears!
